This blog.

By definition, this blog will never be finished since I am perpetually escapading. So far, 3/4 of China is done (a work in progress...), but now I'm in Mo'orea and will be attempting to finish Mo'orea first since it's only a month, not almost a year. But with super limited internet, this isn't going to be lightning fast (surprise!).

Cheers!

Chinese New Year!

Elizabeth and I went downtown and stayed with some of our friends at the Embassy for the first night of Chinese New Year.  I have definitely never seen so many fireworks at once in my life.  360 degrees around you.  There is no official show, no official viewing place.  Everyone just sets off their own fireworks wherever they happen to be around the city, even if that means directly next to lots of buildings.  The fireworks continued everywhere for quite some time after that first night (Chinese New Year is 15 days long after all...).

Yup.  We helped add to the celebration.

 When in China...

Much later in the night, we saw this trashcan burst into flames.  I took pictures, but the Embassy (right next door) made me delete them.

I cannot imagine the view these people must have had out their windows (this was a smaller one compared to the show they were getting).

The aftermath of our fireworks.  Multiply this by a very large number and this is what was densely strewn all throughout the city.

These people had quite a system down, in which four groups of people would literally cart out the next huge batch of fireworks in between batches, and all light their pile at the same time.  This went on and on and on.  I can't even imagine how many fireworks they set off.  This is just one exhibit of many on our block.

Happy Year of the Dragon!
