This blog.

By definition, this blog will never be finished since I am perpetually escapading. So far, 3/4 of China is done (a work in progress...), but now I'm in Mo'orea and will be attempting to finish Mo'orea first since it's only a month, not almost a year. But with super limited internet, this isn't going to be lightning fast (surprise!).

Cheers!

Surviving China 102

When you have no idea what the oven thermometer means...
...don't be fooled by your dad's explanation of it.

So this is our oven thermometer.  I don't have a clue what it means and could not find a thing about it on Google.  Naturally, I emailed my family, figuring at least one of our many engineers may know.  My very insightful dad wrote this back:

I believe that must be a Korean oven using the:

Absolute Hangul BTU Scale, version 1 (AHB-1)

Version 1 is obsolete now and the latest version is Version 7.  So the scale you are looking at actually there to allow you to select which version of the AHB scale you wish to use.  Now the conversion between AHB and Celsius is very complex requiring a working knowledge of Korean mathematical models which in turn may be used to completely describe all Hangul characters.

So I believe you may be left with going out and purchasing a cheap Celsius thermometer.

Love,
Dad

Despite a few parts of it that sounded questionable to me, Elizabeth and I completely bought it.  Just one depiction of how we are often given bizarre explanations for things here and we have learned to just accept it... not to encourage my dad in this...

...My dad gave me a Fahrenheit oven thermometer for Christmas.
